A mineral specimen has characteristic features: It often, can be a rock specimen and, sometimes, an ore specimen. It usually consists of two or more mineral species and can be a specimen of multiple mineral species. It can be divided into two or more parts. The nomenclature of minerals are defined by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names, International Mineralogical Association (CNMMN, IMA). Chemical analyses and crystallographic works for mineral specimens are carried out in the National Science Museum, Tokyo in the procedure of registration. As the results of our research activity, more than 48,000 mineral specimens have been registered in the National Science Museum, Tokyo, of which 15,000 are from abroad. Approximately 70 percents of mineral species found in Japan are covered with the NSM collection. The National Science Museum, Tokyo, as a centre of descriptive mineralogy in Japan, has studied and described major parts of Japanese new minerals and stored their type specimen. The database of the mineral collection can be accessed through our website. The NSM mineral collections can be loaned for exhibitions in the other museums and for scientific investigations in universities, colleges and public institutes
