Unnecessity of the Clr and Cls for the Function of Serum Bactericidal Factor, RaRF

Ra-reactive factor (RaRF) is a complement dependent bactericidal factor found in vertebrate sera. Here, we investigated the participation of Clr and Cls in the complement activation induced by the human and mouse RaRF, using a hemolytic system where lysis of erythrocytes sensitized were measured after treating the cell with various components of complement. The results show that RaRF induced the Clindependent hemolytic reaction. Addition of Clr and Cls subcomponents or supplement of serum, as a source of any possible factor which helps the Clr and Cls, to this hemolytic system did not increase the degree of the RaRF induced hemolysis. This hemolysis was not induced by the polysaccharide-binding component of RaRF supplemented with Clr-Cls fraction. These results indicated that the complement-activiting component of RaRF is not replaced by the Clr and Cls subcomponents of complement.
