There are strain differences in the pregnancy block caused by pheromones in mice; both in the receptivity of the females to accept the pregnancy block and in the ability of the males to induce it. An attempt was made to analyze the strain differences genetically, using F_1 hybrid animals in this study. F_1 females, employed for C57BL/6 (non-acceptable strain to pregnancy block) as female for producing F_1 hybrids, showed a low rate in pregnancy block to strange males except for (C57BL/6×DDY) F_1 females. On the contrary, F_1 hybrids, employed for acceptable strains, C3H, BALB/c and DDY, as females for hybrids, showed a high rate in pregnancy block to strange males. The ability of the male to induce pregnancy block was examined with F_1 hybrid males as strange males. F_1 hybrid males of (C3H×C57BL/6) and (BALB/c×C57BL/6), employed for C57BL/6 as males, showed a low rate in pregnancy block. On the contrary, F_1 hybrid male of (C57BL/6×BALB/c), being BALB/c as males, showed a high rate in pregnancy block in C3H females. The rate of induced pregnancy block with (C57BL/6×BALB/c) F_1 males was as high as with BALB/c male.
