Studies have been reported on the effects of actinomycin D, chromomycin A3, mitomycin C or daunomycin on the lens. These antineoplastic antibiotics are potent inhibitors of nucleic acid synthesis. The present study using a cultured crystalline lens suggests that these agents induce cataract-ogenesis by inhibition of RNA and DNA synthesis.
