Weaning rats administered small doses of two concentrations of lead acetate in drinking water for 40 days failed to demonstrate any learning disorders relative to controls as measured by an operant conditioning of the FR schedule. Rats whose mothers were administered the same dose of lead acetate throughout the period of nursing, weighed less and demonstrated learning impairments relative to controls. The effects of lead on learning may be greatest during the earliest developmental stage.
