• Kitakami Massif is located in northeast Honshu, Japan. It has an approximate area of 12, 000 km^2. Its maximum length from north to south is 254 km and maximum width (Morioka-Miyako) is 72 km. The Kitakami Massif is mainly composed of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks associated with metamorphic and intrusive rocks, and has been accepted as one of the best fields for studies of Paleozoic and Mesozoic geology and paleontology in Japan. Many standard sections of various ages have been settled in this Massif. Since Naumann (1881) reported a Triassic fossil Monotis from the massif, just 100 years have passed. During this period, a great number of geological papers have been published, and knowledge of details of the geologic history of this massif has been accumulated. From the viewpoint of economic geology, the Kitakami Massif is also one of the important fields in Japan and prospecting of ore deposits has been extensively carried out. The purpose of this bibliography is to make a step toward compilation of a comprehensive knowledge concerning the geology of the Kitakami Massif in seeking to organize what has been learned of the subjects set forward up to date. In addition to the bibliography, a check list of the fossil faunal and floral species reported from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic of the Kitakami Massif is now under preparation. The bibliography contains a total of 2729 papers published during 1881-1979, including abstracts of papers read at meetings and congresses of the geological sciences. The bibliography is concerned with general geology, stratigraphy, paleontology, mineralogy, petrology and economic geology. Papers treating only post-Mesozoic geology of the Kitakami Massif are excluded from this work. The bibliography consists of two parts ; Author Index (Part I) and Subject Index (Part II). In the former, the literatures are alphabetically arranged by authors with a full title and medium of publication. The number of text-figures, tables and plates, if any, is also included. The literatures written only in Japanese without any of English, German or French abstracts are depicted by the medium of the publication only in Japanese, while others are by abbreviated one in English. The subject index (Part II) of this bibliography is now in preparation and will be published separately.
