The effect of spin polarization on the predicted stability of intermetallic phases is examined. The alloy Hamiltonian is approximated by a double Ising model and the coupling parameters, or effective interatomic interactions, are computed from a perturbation expansion of the random medium as defined by the coherent potential approximation. It is shown that the magnetic effects can greatly modify the predicted chemical behavior in alloy systems, as is illustrated for the cases of the stability of the FeCo intermetallic and the site substitution of Fe in Ni_3Al.Ising modelAshkin-Teller modelmagnetismalloys
