Spectrographic Determination of Ferroalloys. II : Determination of Microamounts of Lead, Copper and Zinc in Ferromanganese

A rapid and accurate method was examined with a medium type quartz spectrograph to determine less than 0.1 per cent of lead and copper and about 0.1 per cent of zinc in ferromanganese. First the excitation conditions having influence on the spectral intensity was studied, and then the adequate line pair of each element to be determined was selected. Further experiments were made to find out a calibration method in which a constituent fluctuating in its concentration, such as manganese in ferromanganese, is used as internal standard. On these experiments the final procedure was established, where Mn 2830.79A/PbI 2833.07A. Mn 3296.88A/CuI 3273.96A, Mn 3296.88A/ ZnI 3302.59A, and Mn 3296.88A/FeI 3286.76A were used as line pairs. When this procedure was applied to production samples, lead, copper and zinc could be determined with the variation coefficients of 4 to 7 per cent, 6 to 7 per cent, and 14 to 16 per cent, respectively.
