Let χ=βexp (-iψ) for -α<x_0<0 and χ=αexp (iψ) for 0<x_0<α as the object and h exp (iδ) for the coated function of diffraction strip, and the intensity distribution in the neighbourhood x_0=0 (metastable region) was calculated. When α=β=1, the results are the same as that of phase annulus. The author is especially interested in the continuity of the intensity at x=0, and it is concluded as follows : (i) when h=0, the curve is continuous independent of the absorption of the object α, β and ψ, (ii) when ψ=±π/2, the curve is continuous independent of α, β and also independent of the construction of the diffraction strip h, δ, (iii) when 〓0, ψ=±π/2 and moreover, (1) if α=β, the curve is continuous only in the cases of δ=±π, (2) ifα〓β, the curve is usually discontinuous. Now if a point within the diffraction strip which corresponds to the geometrical image of the point of the light source under consideration (hereafter, referred to as pinpoint) is not coated, that is h=1, it causes the change in the brightness of back ground of the image. In this case, the conclusions for the continuity at x=0 are as follows : (i) when α=β, the curve is usually continuous at x=0, independent of ψ, h and δ of diffraction strip except the pinpoint, (ii) when α〓β, the curve is always discontinuous, independent of ψ, h, δ. These results were obtained through the experiment.
