Utilizing that the dielectric constant of water is very large as compared with that of solids, an electric humidity tester was constructed, by which the humidity content of practical materials, such as cement, flour, etc., can be determined by measuring their dielectric constants. The tester is portable, and the measurement is prompt and needs no special technique. For this tester some basic experiments were made, namely, relations between the humidity content and the apparent dielectric constants of these materials, and discus ions of some possible sources of error in measurement are given. The anomalous high dielectric constant which was observed when the solid adsorbs humidity was also remarked.
