A fossil specimen of a large Tubinare bird, belonging to the family Diomedeidae, is described on the basis of an incomplete right femur from the Dainichi Sand of Kakegawa Group, Middle Pliocene. This femur was discovered by Tatsuya Kaede, from Misogaya, Yashiro, Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The major characters of the femur, besides its large size, are 1) crista trochanteris situated more internally; 2) tubercle for m. caudofemoralis large and on the internal surface of shaft somewhat posteriorly; 3) antero-external surface of shaft flattened and wide in the proximal, its middle narrow laterally, and its distal end expanded laterally; 4) cranio-caudal thickness of shaft almost constant from proximal end to distal end; 5) shaft slightly curved cranially; 6) trochlea very small and sulcus patellaris very wide; 7) crest developed on the proximal intrenal margin of condylus medialis; 8) condylus medialis thin cranio-caudally; 9) impressio lig. cruciati very shallow. These characters were compared with those of Recent birds, and it was found out that this femur resemble in some respects those of a certain species of Tubinares. This material is very similar to Diomedea. The expansion of proximal of shaft postero-externally resembles to Diomedea. Tubercle for m. caudofemoralis is almost same. The depth of fossa poplitea is very similar. The curvature of shaft is also. The crest on the proximal internal margin of condylus lateralis, and condylus medialis, are similar to those of Diomedea. Fossil forms reported in the family Diomedeidae are Giganthornis eaglesomei ANDREWS 1916,Diomedea anglica LYDEKKER 1891,and D. californica L. MILLER 1962. The size of this femur is almost equal to Giganthornis eaglesomei, though G. eaglesomei was described on the sternum. Here, this specimen is identified as a species belonging to family Diomedeidae.
