Based on our recent investigations on cephalopod fauna around western Japan and Taiwan, as well as in the East China Sea and the South China Sea, the list of cephalopods known to occur in Chinese-Japanese subtropical region includes 188 species, belonging to 35 families. They include several undescribed species, especially in the families Sepiolidae and Octopodidae, of which systematic evaluations are in progress. The most diverse families are the family Octopodidae with 52 species, Sepiidae with 33 species, Sepiolidae with 15 species, Loliginidae with 15 species, Enoploteuthidae with 10 species and Ommastrephidae with 8 species. The South China Sea contributes 128 species, followed by western Japan with 97 species. The East China Sea and Taiwan contribute 67 and 78 species, respectively. Cephalopods are roughly classified into three groups according to their regional occurrences. The first group includes 36 species, which are distributed mainly around western Japan and a part of the East China Sea. The second group includes 67 species, which are distributed mainly in the South China Sea and a part around Taiwan. The third group includes 61 species, which appear in nearly all four areas. The remainders are several octopuses, those only known from Taiwan at present, and a few pelagic oegopsids which have not been fully investigated. Judging from the species compositions around western Japan and the South China Sea, it is suggested that a minor zoogeographic boundary exists around Taiwan, especially for neritic and shallow benthic cephalopods.
