Despite its small size, Taiwan has a very diverse marine fauna. It has been estimated that of the many groups of marine organisms which we have estimates, the number of species known to occur in Taiwan is about 10%, and in some cases even exceeds 10% of the total number of species of the respective group known in the world. However, despite the large diversity, the taxonomic collection and study of the fauna are of rather recent history. The making of collections of biological specimens and research on them began in the last century, but the activities were disrupted by the Second World War and other events for a long period. The resumption of activities only occurred in the last three decades, especially since the lifting of the martial law in the 1980s. At present, the taxonomic collections of the marine invertebrates are scattered in several institutions, notably the National Taiwan Museum, Taipei, the Museum of the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, the Museum of the Institute of Fishery Biology of the National Taiwan University, Taipei, the Museums of the Department of Fishery Biology, National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, the Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute, Keelung, and the National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung. The taxonomic research on the marine invertebrates has not received the attention it deserved. Many groups of animals have not been studied. The groups that are better studied are corals, crustaceans, particularly decapods, molluscs and echinoderms. Much remains to be done in the study of the marine invertebrate fauna of Taiwan. This article briefly describes the various collections and the taxonomic research of marine invertebrates in Taiwan.
