An outline of the research project "Study on Deep-Sea Fauna and Preservation of Deep-Sea Ecosystem" was described. The project describes the deep-sea fauna around Japan and traces anthropogenic pollutants in the deep-sea animals. The research was conducted by the Department of Zoology, National Science Museum, Tokyo in cooperation with the Department of Environment Conservation, Ehime University. In the first term, extending from 1993 to 1996,Suruga Bay in central Japan was targeted for the research field. The part of the project resulted in the publication of 10 papers, the present monograph.
