The fine structure of the compound eye of Onthophagus lenzii, which is a common nocturnal dung beetle in Japan, was studied. The compound eye is almost divided into two parts, narrow dorsal and extensive ventral eyes, by a well developed canthus. The eye is of typical scotopic type with eucone cone arrangement. The construction of the rhabdom in both eyes differs widely from each other. In the ventral eye, the distal part of the rhabdom region is occupied by a large distal rhabdomere. The proximal rhabdom is composed of six rhabdomeres which are inverted in organization according to the level of the rhabdom ; thus, five to six lobed patterns in transverse sections occupy the proximal region. The dorsal eye lacks the distal rhabdomere and the rhabdom is composed of seven rhabdomeres other than a basal retinula cells. The rhabdom exhibits different compositions from the dorsalmost part to the opposite and even within one dorsal ommatidium. These results were compared with those of four other dung beetle species already studied and discussed.
