Cylindrocaulus patalis (Lewis), 1883, is the sole passalid species in Japan, and its compound eye was examined by light and electron microscopy as part of an ongoing comparative study of the fine structure of the compound eyes of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea. The compound eye is small and partially divided by a canthus into narrow dorsal and wide ventral parts. The Semper cell, which number 4-6 in each facet, does not form a distinct cone ; the eye is, thus, of the acone type. The ommatidium, which is thicker distally and tapers off more proximally, is composed of 7-9 retinula cells. The rhabdom lies in the centre of thicker, distal region of the retinula cell bundle and the organization of its microvilli is markedly irregular. Primary pigment cells amount to four or five in number contrary to the usual figure of two. These features of the eye are thought to be somewhat unusual in view of what is known from other scarabaeid beetles to date.
