The fine structure of the compound eye of Trox mitis has been studied and compared with that of other scarabaeid beetles. 1) The compound eye which is composed of approx. 600 ommatidia is ellipsoid, and of the scotopic type. 2) The four Semper cell nuclei are intercalated in the approx. 5.8 μm wide space, between cornea and cone. 3) The cone is surrounded by two kinds of multilayered ER ; and outer one which is coarse and an inner one which is denser and becomes increasingly more convoluted as it merges with the periphery of the cone. 4) The retinal width is relatively narrow, occupying merely 50% of the whole thickness of the eye. At the distal end of the rhabdom, the configuration of it, in transverse section, is round. Toward the middle region, the rhabdom thickens and exhibits microvilli that are arranged linearly, in five regular directions. 5) In the lightadapted state, fine particles of high electron density appear at the distal ends of the rhabdom region. In the dark-adapted state, these particles are replaced by several layers of ER in some retinula cells.
