The fine structure of the compound eye of the stag-beetle, Prosopocoilus inclinatus (Lucanidae), was observed and compared with that of the phylogenetically related family Scarabaeidae. The eye is of the scotopic, eucone type like that of some nocturnal and diurno-nocturnal scarabaeids. The surface of the cornea is smooth and flat so that external facets are not formed. Although the structure of the retinula resembles that of scarabaeids, remarkable differences were found in regard to the pattern of the rhabdom. Compared with scarabaeids the rhabdom assumes a very complicated pattern due to retinula cells folding longitudinally. The rhabdom-cytoplasm ratio at mid-rhabdom level is about 4.9 : 1. No tracheal tapetum is formed though a few isolated tracheoles are present in the retinular region.
