The ultrastructure of the compound eyes of two Japanese dynastine species, Allomyrina dichotomus (Ad) and Eophileurus chinensis (Ec), was studied with the electron microscope. In both beetles, the outer surface of the cornea is flat and smooth, so that, externally, facets cannot be seen. Retinula cell arrangement and construction resemble those of scotopic eyes in other scarabaeid beetles. The distal part of the rhabdom region is occupied by the large distal rhabdomere (DR) of one cell. In Ad, the DR reaches halfway down the rhabdom region, where the rhabdom assumes a seven-lobed pattern in cross section. In Ec, the DR forms only a thin distal layer and the bulk of the rhabdom shows a six-lobed pattern. The basal retinula cell extends into the central part of the rhabdom in Ad, whereas in Ec, it does not reach the rhabdom. In both species the rhabdom region is surrounded by several tens of tracheoles per ommatidium.
