A comparative morphology of the 8th to 10th abdominal segments of the Staphylinidae and the allied groups is dealt with. The 8th sternum is more variously modified than the 8th tergum in each sex. Each of the 8th tergum and sternum is more variously modified in structure in male than in female. The 9th tergum consists of an unpaired plate or a pair of plates. The 9th sternum is composed of an unpaired plate in male and of hemisternites, coxites and styli in pairs in female. The paired or unpaired subgenital plates are situated between the hemisternites in females of some groups. The 10th tergum is usually composed of an unpaired plate, but is sometimes divided longitudinally in two plates. These component plates of the abdomen have been reduced in various degrees or completely lost in various lineages. The 10th sternum is present just under anus only in Micropeplus, Lordithon and Aleochara
