A comparative morphology of the antennae, labrum and mandibles of the Staphylinidae and their allied groups is treated. The antennae are composed of scapes, pedicels and flagella, and are 11-segmented in general, but the decrease in the number of the segments has independently occurred in some lineages. The labrum is an unpaired plate situated before clypeus and is separated from the latter by a suture. The mandibles are usually paired and symmetrical, and project anteriorly owing to prognathism of the head. They are provided with the mandibular prosthecae and molas in the primitive groups.
