This is the first part of a series of papers on the comparative morphology of the Staphylinidae and the allies, and includes introduction, materials and methods, and the first part of the comparative morphology on the head sutures, eyes and ocelli. Following sutures are observed on the head : frontoclypeal, midcranial, occipital, hypostomal and postoccipital sutures. They are often obliterated or completely lost in various lineages of the superfamily Staphylinoidea. The eyes are variable in size and structure in this superfamily, but they are completely lost in the Leptotyphlinae, some members of the Osoriinae, etc. The ocelli are found only in the subfamilies Omaliinae (2 in number) and Metopsiinae (1 in number) at adult stage. In addition, discovery of a 3-ocellated individual of Lesteva sp. (Omaliinae, Oxytelidae) is reported from Shikoku, Japan.
