A comparative morphology of the mesothorax and metathorax of the Staphylinidae and the allied groups is discussed. The mesothorax is composed of mesonotum, anepisterna, epimera, trochantins, prepectus and composite ventral plate in general. The presternum is retained only in Xylodrepa and Pseudopsis. The mesonotum is composed of anterior phragma, prescutum, scutum+scutellum, and postnotum. The prescutum is completely lost in such flightless species as Megalopaederus lewisi. The mesocoxal cavities are classified into four types based on the shape and position in the pterothorax. The metathorax is composed of metanotum, anepisterna, katepisterna, epimera and composite ventral plate. The metanotum is composed of acrotergite, anterior phragma, prescutum, scutum, scutellum, postnotum and posterior phragma. The acrotergite, anterior phragma and prescutum have disappeared in Megalopaederus lewisi.
