Ni, Pd and Mo electrical contacts are separated in a dc 42V/8.4 and 20A resistive circuit. The motion of bright spots in a breaking arc that occurs between an electrical contact pair is observed with a high-speed video camera from one direction. And the damage of an electrical contact surface is observed with a digital camera. As results, there is a characteristic in the motion of anode and cathode bright spots and the eroded regions on electrical contacts by the contact material. The bright spots of Pd contacts are more greatly than that of Ni and Mo contacts. But the breaking arc of Pd contacts is darker than that of Ni and Mo. The motion of bright spots and the eroded regions of Ni and Mo are almost similar. The area where the bright spots moves and the eroded regions on electrical contact is almost corresponding.
