The purpose of this study was to measure oxygen saturation levels of the masseter muscle during clenching using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and to establish normal ranges for the following parameters : the break point appearance time and the 1/2 recovery time. Another purpose was to compare masseter muscle fatigue tendencies between normal occlusion and anterior open bite subjects. Forty normal occlusion adults (20 males and 20 females) and 15 open bite adults (5 males and 10 females) were examined. An NIRS probe was placed on the middle of the masseter muscle on the voluntary chewing side. Changes in oxygen saturation levels were measured during clenching for 30 sec at 50% MVC. In the normal occlusion subjects, the mean±standard deviation was 16.8±3.7 sec for the break point appearance time, and 11.2±3.4 sec for the 1/2 recovery time. Compared with normal occlusion subjects, open bite subjects statistically significantly showed a more rapid appearance of the break point and longer 1/2 recovery time. The results suggest that the masseter muscle oxygenation during clenching in open bite subjects differs from normal occlusion subjects, and thus open bite subjects may have problems with muscle fatigue tendency during mastication.
