Significance of Biomaterials and Drug Delivery Systems in Tissue Engineering(Special Issue on "Stem Cell Biology and Tissue Regeneration")

Tissue engineering is a newly emerging biomedical form to assist the regeneration of body tissue defect in the size too large for self-repairing, that is, it aims to substitute the biological functions of damaged and injured organs by incorporating cells. It is undoubtedly indispensable for successful tissue engineering to artificially create an environment suitable for regeneration induction in addition to the cells. Such creation can be realized only by providing a 3-dimensional scaffold of biomaterials for the cell proliferation and differentiation as well as growth factors. Growth factors are often required to promote tissue regeneration while they can induce angiogenesis which oxygen and nutrients supply to effectively maintain the biological functions of cells transplanted for organ substitution. However, the biological effects of growth factor cannot be always expected because of its poor in vivo stability, unless its drug delivery systems (DDS) are contrived. In this paper, significance of biomaterials and DDS in tissue engineering is emphasized by introducing the experimental data including in vivo tissue organ regeneration.
