Various dopants were added to 33BaF_2-4GdF_3-63ZrF_4 (mol%) glass to control the refractive index and some properties of the resultant glasses were investigated. It has become apparent that LiF, PbF_2, AlF_3 and BiF_3 are useful dopants for controlling the refractive index of BaF_2-GdF_3-ZrF_4 glasses. Waveguide structure has been formed by casting a cladding glass melt around the core glass rod.
