High pressure argon gas up to 70 atm. Was irradiated by a Q-switched ruby laser. The dynamical behavior of the laser induced plasma was observed, and the development mechanism of the plasma towards for focusing lens was studied. Two different development mechanisms could be observed under the same experimental conditions; a breakdown wave and a radiation supported shock wave. At high pressure with a lens of long focal length, only a breakdown wave could be obtained, while at low pressure with a lens of short focal length, a radiation supported shock wave was predominant.
