Ultrasonic Imaging Reconstructed from the Inclination Angle of a Smooth Surface

We propose a method for acoustical imaging, reconstructed from the inclination angle of a smooth surface. The detected inclination image is a differential image of the original geometry. The sensing unit consists of an ultrasonic transmitter and two ultrasonic receivers. Three transducers are kept facing an object. The inclination angle of the object surface depends on the phase difference between the two detected signals. Finally, the geometry of the object is reconstructed from the integration of the measured inclination image. Good experimental results were obtained in the reconstruction of a slightly ablated aluminum plate with an area of approximately 95 × 145 mm^2, and a concave mirror with an area of approximately 115 × 115 mm^2, at the frequency of 2.0 MHz. The spatial resolution corresponded to a transducer interval. This method has the advantage in that it can be used for industrial measurements and for medical diagnostics.
