High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy of a Coincidence Site Boundary in BaTiO_3 Ceramics

A triple grain junction including a Σ=5 coincidence site boundary showing a small deviation from the perfect mismatching observed in normally prepared BaTiO_3 ceramics was detected by electron diffraction. The periodicity of the atomic coincidence site structure of the boundary was observed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. A Σ=5 coincidence site lattice (CSL) related to the Σ=5 twist structure was revealed in the high resolution image. Furthermore, the CSL structure was confirmed by the optical diffraction pattern obtained from the negative of the high-resolution image.
