Phase Separation and Solid Solution in Nonstoichiometric and Stoichiometric (Sr, Mg) TiO_3 Ceramics

Phase separation and solid solution of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric (Sr, Mg)TiO_3 ceramics were studied using HR-AEM (high-resolution analytical electron microscopy). SrTiO_3 and MgTiO_3 phase separation was observed in all specimens. In addition, a small amount of MgTi_2O_5 was detected in a B-site-excess specimen. Mg solid solution to SrTiO_3 could not be detected, but Sr solid solution to MgTiO_3 was detected. This arose from the different structural packing density between the SrTiO_3 perovskite structure and the MgTiO_3 ilmenite structure.
