Temporal changes of molecular alignments in a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TN LC) cell with 10-μm thickness were studied by a measurement of transmitted light intensities using the Wollaston prism. Intensity I_<⫽>, whose wave vibrates in the direction parallel to the director, approached zero at first after the alternating electric field at 16 volts and at 480 Hz was applied, but I_⊥ increased conversely. Within 1 ms after applying the electric fled, the sum of I_<⫽> and I_⊥ decreased. There would be a scattering loss of transmission intensity caused by the turbulence of molecular alignments. The molecules in the middle portion of a TN LC cell will begin to be realigned within a few milliseconds after the electric field is applied or removed.
