Daytime Monitoring of Urban NO_2 Column Density by Solar Spectroscopic Method

We describe the monitoring of the column density of NO_2 using an automated apparatus equipped with a sun-tracker, an optical fiber, and a monochromator with a charge-coupled device array. In order to extract a small absorption from the observed spectral, we introduce a new algorithm in which a spectrum obtained with the same instrument is employed as a reference. This leads to a better elmination of the noise due to large Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum in a wavelength range of 430-450nm. By means of careful spectral matching between the NO_2 cross section and the optical thickness derived from the observation, a sensitivity for NO_2 column density as low as 1 × 10^<19>molecules/m^2 is attained.
