Sensitivity Enhancement for Acetylene Detection at 1.5 μm by Use of a High-Finesse Optical Cavity

We investigate the applicability of a high-finesse optical cavity to trace gas detection. An external-cavity diode laser is used to observe the absorption of acetylene at 1.5 μm. The detection sensitivity is enhanced by use of a 25 cm Fabry-Perot cavity of finesse 〜70 mounted inside a vacuum chamber. By locking the laser frequency to the peak of a cavity mode, which in turn is tuned to the peak of molecular absorption, an effective path length of 11 m is attained over a pressure range of 1 to 100 Pa.
