Critical Current Densities and Irreversibility Fields in Pb-Doped and Pb-Free Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y Superconductors

From the hysteresis in DC magnetization loops, we evaluated critical current densities J_c and irreversibility fields B_<irr> of Pb-doped and Pb-free Bi-2223 superconductors which were prepared from nominal compositions Bi_<1.68>Pb_<0.32>Sr_<1.85>Ca_<1.85>Cu_<2.85>B_xO_y (x = 0, 0.01) and Bi_2Sr_<1.6>Ca_<2.4>Cu_3O<10> by different heating processes. The intragrain J_c and B_<irr> for the Pb-doped samples were larger than those of the Pb-free one, although the super-conducting volume fraction and superconducting characteristics of the three samples are almost the same. This result suggests that effective pinning centers are introduced by the partial substitution of Pb for Bi in Bi-2223.
