New Compact Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Spectrometer

A small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer has been installed at the exit of the guide tube glancitag at the cold neutron source of Kyoto University Reactor. In this spectrometer, double-reflection Xi-Ti mirrors are used as a monochromator instead of a mechanical velocity selector. The scvattered neutrons are detected by a 2-dimensionalposition-sensitive detector which has been developed by the authaors. The geometetry of the spectrometer is designed in consideration of the compromise between the resoluttioun for scatterirtg vectors and the intensity of scattered neutrons. The average flux of 5.5 Å neutronas with the resolution of 15% is 3.9×10^4 n・cm^<-2>s^-1 at the sample position. The Q-range covered is from 0.004 A^<-1> to 0.28 A^<-1>. In the preliminary experiments the performance of the spectrometer is checked with a biomolecule, ferritin. The results indicate that the spectrorneter has anadequate performance for strttcture analysis of macrcomolectular systems.
