Determination of Spin-Hamiltonian Parameters D and E of Cr^<3+> in SnO_2 Crystals

We have experimentally determined the absolute signs and the magnitudes of the spin-Hamiltonian parameters D and E for substitutional Cr^<3+> ions in SnO_2 crystals by use of a method combining the angular and the temperature dependence. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements have been carried out at the X-band in the temperature range of 123-300 K. Firstly, we obtained E/D=-0.20±0.01 from the angular dependence of the EPR spectra. Secondly, we measured the temperature dependence of the EPR intensity ratio of allowed and forbidden transitions to obtain each sign of D and E. The signs and the magnitudes of D and E obtained were 0.703±0.002 cm^<-1> and +0.146±0.001 cm^<-1>, respectively. These results are consistent with the theoretical estimates which were obtained using the developed superposition model for rutile-type crystals.
