A theory of a diffraction integral transform, which involves Rayleigh and Fresnel transforms as special cases, is developed by means of a functional analytic method. It is shown that this convolution type transform, represented by operator T_z, has linear continuity and semi-group property. By changing φ, which is a complex function in the propagation kernel, various types of differential representation of T_z, can be presented. Moreover, three kinds of induced orthogonal function systems and a sampling representation of the transform are derived by limiting φ and the variable domain.
