Experimental studies of a hot cathode discharge type Osaka tube are made to obtain the current characteristics flowing into the anode and the collector, and the microwave detection characteristics at various gas pressures. An experimental equation for optimum operation of the tube for the ionic collector current is deduced as H_p=MH_<ce>(M=0, 1, 2, 3,....), where H_p is the magnetic field strength which produces the maximum detected output signal and H_<ce> the magnetic field corresponding to the cyclotron frequency of electron. For the case of the RF field applied between two non-split-anode, (V_p)_<Hp>≠0 is generally less than or equal to (V_p)_<Hp>≠where V_p is the anode voltage which produces the maximum detected output signal and in cases in which H_p≠0, the value of H_p becomes smaller than H_<ce> as the anode voltage is, increased.
