Study of Metastable Structure of Pb-Sb Films Condensed at Low Temperature

The structure of Pb-Sb films condensed onto a substrate kept at the liquid helium or nitrogen temperature by vacuum evaporation has been investigated by means of electron diffraction and electric resistance measurements. Diffraction patterns of the films with concentrations between 17 and 100at. % Sb show diffuse halos. The radial distribution analysis has been carried out for these films in order to decide whether they are in a true amorphous state or consist of very fine crystallites. The results lead to the conclusion that the state of atomic aggregate of these films is certainly amorphous. The crystallization temperature of the films decreases as Pb concentration increases. The behavior of electric resistance in an amorphous state differs remarkably from that in a crystalline state after the crystallization.
