Precise Positioning of a Sea Bottom Transponder (2) : Principle of Measurements and Error Analysis

In the previous paper, it is shown that not only the position of an soa bottom transponder but also underwater acoustic velocity can be determined simultaneously, if the positions of sea surface transponders and distances between sea surface and bottom transponders are given. When the underwater acoustic field is divided into horizontal layers, division into two or three layers is sufficient for the purpose of determining precisely the position of seaq bottom transponder alone. In the present report, the theoretical possibility of determining the position of the sea bottom transponder with the accuracy of centimeter by using measuring devices which can be used now are clarified. The importance of the simultaneous estimation of underwater acoustic velocity for the determination of the accurate positioning of the sea bottom transponder is also shown. Furthermore. effects of errors included in positioning of the sea surface transponders and in measurements of distances between sea surface and sea bottom transponders on the determination of the sea bottom transponder is discussed.
