The effectiveness of using e-mail in business communication is widely acknowledged by practitioners and academicians under today's intense business environment. However, the diffusion of e-mail in organizations differs largely among companies. Prior studies in Information Systems area showed relationship between several factors which influence the use of e-mail systems. In this study, we focused on three major factors, and developed a model which describes the difference in the diffusion rate of e-mail systems in Japanese organizations where only few related studies are reported to date. A questionnaire research was conducted to major Japanese companies. Results of this study and future research topics are discussed followed by implications for practitioners.
