Inhibition by aphidicolin (APC), an inhibitor specific for a-type DNA polymerase, of transdifferentiation into tracheary elements was characterized in Zinnia mesophyll cells. APC was effective when given in the first 24 h of culture and exposure continued until the 36th hour. This suggests temporal involvement of a-type DNA polymerase in transdifferentiation.
