Light absorption patterns of anthocyanin-containing cells

Absorption spectra of intact pigment cells and their 0.1% MeOH-HCl extracts were examined using forty-three plants, with special regard to color variation factors. Intact cell spectra measured with a microspectrophotometer were classified into four groups according to the λ_<max> in the visible region. In each group, the difference (Δλ) between the absorption maxima of the intact cell and 0.1% MeOH-HCl extract revealed a characteristic value. In particular, high Δλ values were obtained in group D, which was typified by the occurrence of metalloanthocyanin. The measurements of Δλ and the approximate ratio of the concomitant compound, showing the absorption maxima in the UV region, and anthocyanin may give a clue to the effects of the metalcomplexing and/or the co-pigmentation on the flower color.
