The penetration of leucine-(U)-^<14>C and glucose-(U)-^<14>C through the bulb epidermal tissue of Allium cepa was examined in the presence of indoleacetic acid (IAA). Not only the uptake of leucine-^<14>C and glucose-^<14>C in epidermal tissue but also their transcellular penetration were accelerated by IAA treatment. N-Ethylmaleimide (NEM) inhibited their uptake and transcellular penetration, and the inhibitory effect was relieved by additional IAA. In the presence of IAA, leucine-^<14>C and glucose-^<14>C were more petrable by adaxial than abaxial application, but in the absence almost no difference due to application side was observed. IAA appears to promote permeability of the epidermal tissue only to substances applied adaxially. N,N'-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) showed a little inhibitory effect on the IAA-induced promotion of the uptake and penetration of leucine-^<14>C applied adaxially. Leucine-^<14>C and glucose-^<14>C penetrated more easily through killed than fresh tissues with little difference between abaxial and adaxial applications.
