Indoleacetic acid induced the swelling of rat erythrocytes in vitro at the concentration of 5×10^<-4>-10^<-2>M. Both the concentrations of Na^+ and K^+ in the treated erythrocytes were elevated, and the acceleration of Na-K-ATPase activity in the ghosts of the treated erythrocytes was also observed. The simultaneous promotion of Na-K-ATPase was relevant to the elevation of K^+ levels in the treated erythrocytes. The higher levels of Na^+ might be induced by the acceleration by IAA of passive diffusion through the erythrocyte membrane.
