Carbon dioxide enhanced chloroplast regeneration in glucose-bleached cells of Chlorella protothecoides in the presence of CMU in the light. Both the formation of chlorophyll and the syntheses of RNA and protein were considerably enhanced. The CO_2 metabolism of algal cells during greening was investigated using ^<14>C-bicarbonate as the tracer. Radiocarbon was largely incorporated into purine and pyrinidine bases in nucleic acid and the arginine in protein, specifically at the crabon atoms derived from carbamylphosphate.
