Effects of chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, puromycin and ethionine on the light-independent and subsequent light-dependent processes of chlorophyll formation in "glucose-bleached" cells of Chlorella protothecoides were studied. These substances, except puromycin, strongly suppressed different phases of chlorophyll formation. Ethionine most strongly suppressed the light-independent phase and chloramphenicol an early, relatively short process in the light-dependent phase of chlorophyll formation. Cyclo-heximide severely suppressed all phases of chlorophyll formation. Possible implications of these results for the biosynthesis of chlorophyll in algal cells are discussed.
