Upon exposure to atmospheric oxygen photosynthesizing cells of Chromatium synthesize glycolic acid and excrete it extracellularly. Under anaerobic conditions, glycolic acid is not detectable as a photoassimilation product. We found that the lower the level of NaHCO_3 in the culture medium the greater the amount of glycolic acid produced oxidatively by the bacterial cells.
