1. Phyllosinol is a phytotoxic metabolite of Phyllosticta sp. This substance at 100μg/ml produced dark grey necrotic lesions on the leaf of red clover. Sensitivities of various plant species to phyllosinol differed both quantitatively and qualitatively. 2. Phyllosinol reduced root growth in rice seedlings by 60% at 10^<-4>M, whereas stimulation of root elongation occurred at a concentration range from 10^<-9> to 10^<-5>M 3. Phyllosinol at 2.5×10^<-4>M promoted adventitious root formation in epicotyls of Azukia cuttings by about 100%. Promotion was partly reduced by simultaneous application of cysteine. 4. IAA-induced elongation of isolated Avena coleoptile sections was inhibited by phyllosinol at a concentration range from 10^<-5> to 10^<-3>M. 5. Sulfhydryl compounds, i.e. cysteine and glutathione relieved inhibition caused by phyllosinol in IAA-induced elongation of Avena coleoptile sections. 6. GA_3-induced elongation of wheat leaf sections was slightly inhibited by phyllosinol at 10^<-4>M. 7. Phyllosinol also has antibiotic activity. Among the organisms tested, Phycomycetes and Gram-negative bacteria appeared most susceptible to phyllosinol.
